Machine learning, you say?

Yisong Yue, assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences, and his team developed a machine-learning tool to automatically generate talking animations from audio recordings of speech. Using eight hours of videos of "neutral" speech—speech without emotional inflection—comprising 2,543 sentences, the team trained a neural network to convert audio of speech into the corresponding animated facial movements. The algorithm allows animation of audio of any language, such as English and Chinese. The work was supported by a collaboration with @DisneyResearch​.

Mathematician Mirzakhani, Princess of Persia

It's a wonderful story.  It's an inspiring story:  Iran’s state-run newspapers break with the country’s strict rules and show the mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani the way she was, with her head uncovered, as the country mourns her death at the age of 40. 

Mirzakhani was the first and (so far) only woman to be awarded a Fields Medal.  That was three years ago. 
The world will always have her work, and these stories.
